Electricity flowing around a silver coil

In Year 11 we look at concepts such as force, energy, motion, gravity, and we also consider the motion of rotating bodies. This year provides a solid introduction to rigour in science, an introduction to calculus in physics, sound laboratory techniques, the meaning of uncertainty in measurements, and how to manage data.

That continues in Year 12 through the study of electromagnetism, in which we investigate the fundamental laws describing electric and magnetic fields. In with the calculus-based theory there is a mix of very hands-on practical work. For instance, students construct electric motors in teams and design and build from scratch their own loudspeaker which is subject to listening tests by peers. That provides experience in the time honoured art of the construction of specialised laboratory equipment, and is a good complement to the advanced theories studied.
